In a packed open meeting held this morning, the Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously to adopt the Improving Verification and Presentation of Caller Identification Information Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (“FNPRM”).
The Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau introduced the item — touting it a proposal that would help consumers regain control over their phones. Commissioner Gomez supported the proposal, noting that robocalls are the No. 1 complaint consumers raise to the FCC. Commissioner Trusty also voiced her support, stating that this item builds on existing industry standards where possible to give consumers better information about the origin of calls. Chairman Carr characterized this as a “different approach” to robocalls, noting that the FCC is focused on prevention of robocalls to end them once and for all, rather than previous “whack-a-mole” efforts.
The FNPRM has been adopted with editorial privileges, meaning further changes may be made before the rules are finalized.
