ITS OVER FOR GENAI IN THE PRACTICE OF LAW– AND I TOLD YOU SO

So after the Heppner ruling last week, any law firm using GenAI in connection with the practice of law is in VERY serious trouble.

Eesh. Bloodbath on the horizon for #biglaw.

But truthfully Heppner is the best thing that could have happened to #biglaw firms and their clients.

GenAI wasn’t saving anybody any money on bills anyway. I heard many #biglaw associates were billing MORE because they were trying to figure out how to use regrettable systems like Harvey in a way that actually was useful and didn’t get their clients sanctioned.

Still law firm leadership–so desperate to seem relevant– was shoving the technology down peoples’ throats at the behest of VERY short term inhouse counsel who were more focused on saving a buck (nope) than getting good legal rules (always a serious judgment issue.)

These folks were unlikely to figure out how poisonous GenAI was to their legal pursuits on their own and the relatively early ruling in Heppner really helped save these guy’s bacon. Best case scenario for them. Real canary in the coalmine situation.

I suspect MOST of the miners (read: law firms using GenAI products) will now make it out alive– and those that don’t have it coming at this point.

As far as I’m concerned Harvey and similar technologies are now bankrupt. We’ll see if their PE backers are smart enough to figure that out or need the courts to explain it to them (probably the latter.)

I suspect there will soon be a large number of law firms/lawyers that come out against GenAI usage now–heroes each *eyeroll*– but remember who saw it first.

The Czar.

And Troutman Amin, LLP.
