California voters head to the polls for primaries in new districts on June 2, 2026.
Following Prop 50 California’s 47th Congressional district now includes Irvine, Lake Forest, Laguna Woods, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills, Laguna Beach, Laguna Nigel and Dana Point. A full map of the new district can be found here.

Not the clearest map but this should help you out some.
Many voters in the newly redistricted 47th Congressional district will have completely new choices, so I thought it was important to spend a little time and help folks decide how best to vote.
This is my absolute HONEST take and I really do want to help voters out in this district– which is why I am putting together this guide. Now obviously this is a biased list since I am, myself, a candidate for office here. Still this is a pretty good and useful guide that voters should consider when making their choices for the June 2, 2026 primary.
First, there are nine candidates running in the race. Two non-party preference candidates–Troutman being one of them. Two Democrats– Incumbent Dave Min being one of them. Four Republicans– although only two are worth considering in my view. And a Libertarian.
Without further adieu, here is this very biased guide for your consideration.
NO PARTY PREFERENCE VOTERS–ERIC J. TROUTMAN IS AN EASY CHOICE
Approximately 23% of voters in District 47 prefer “no party” to represent them. Assuming these voters are true and loyal to their registration they should theoretically be focused on only a qualified “independent” candidate to represent the district and that is plainly Eric J. Troutman.
Troutman is a widely known complex litigator, billion-dollar problem solver, and is credited with stopping more robocalls than any human being alive. He is dedicated to ending the party system, balancing the budget, protecting small business and bringing down the cost of living.
His legal and business success make him, without question, the best qualified “no party preference” candidate and almost certainly the best qualified candidate in the field as a whole.
Indeed, Troutman is known as the “Czar” in legal circles given his complete dominance of certain esoteric legal fields and lawyers from all around the nation travel to see him speak.
Any non-partisan voter should be eager to be represented by a qualified and proven winner like Troutman. Real no brainer here.
HARD RIGHT (MAGA)– ERIC J. TROUTMAN IS THE SMART PLAY, BUT SOME VOERS MAY LIKE GONZALEZ
Hard right voters need to acknowledge their candidate of preference will have no chance in the November election. Following Prop 50 the Republican brand is a kiss of death in District 47 and there is essentially no chance even a moderate Republican ekes through. For those hoping for a hard right choice there is simply no viable path to a November win and a vote for a hard-right Republican is essentially throwing your vote away.
Hard-right or MAGA voters in California Congressional District 47 should consider voting Eric J Troutman not because he is a hard right candidate- he is not–but because he is a right-of-Min contender who has a real chance to steal a seat from the Democrats in deep blue California.
No, Troutman is not going to do everything Trump says– he will be far more focused on making good deals with the President and delivering much needed tax relief to this district– but you can count on Troutman to be productive for the District, unlike the dismal failure that has been Dave Min’s track record. Plus Troutman has no problem standing up to Newsom and Sacramento– remember TROUTMAN WAS THE ONLY CANDIDATE TO PUBLICALLY OPPOSE PROP 50 AND SPEND CAMPAIGN DOLLARS OPPOSING IT. So if you want someone you can count on to fight the circus in Sacramento Troutman is your guy.
For voters who really just want to vote for a Republican–even though it is likely just throwing a vote away– the right choice for the hard-right Republican is Christopher Gonzales (R). Gonzalez is a Catholic and running on a right-wing agenda that will please those who really want to see MAGA priorities in D.C. Plus as an attorney he has better qualifications than any of the other Republican contenders when it comes to making laws.
CENTER RIGHT (FISCAL CONSERVATIVES)–ERIC J. TROUTMAN IS TOP CHOICE, BUT MAXSENTI IS A TRADITIONAL OPTION
Fiscal conservatives have had a rough go in recent elections, and this year is no different.
With successive administrations– both Democratic and Republican– adding massively to the national debt and spending RECKLESSLY it may seem like no vote is safe. A vote for a Republican will lead to more support of Trump’s reckless spending spree. And, of course, a vote for a Democrat is even worse!
Luckily center-right California District 47 voters do have a clear choice– Eric J. Troutman. Troutman is not a traditional Republican and will not be responsive to Trump’s endless demands for blank checks from Congress. He has the autonomy to fight back on reckless and needless spending and has the firepower to support intelligent reforms, cut taxes, and fight Sacramento’s reckless and chaotic spending.
As a moderate centrist with EXTRARORINARY qualifications Troutman is exactly the sort of center-right candidate a fiscal conservative should be looking to back. Indeed, Troutman is a dream come true for fiscal conservatives in District 47. Plus he has a broad-based appeal that will allow him to capture voters from both parties and allow him to breeze to an easy win over Min in November– something no Republican-aligned candidate can possibly accomplish.
For center-right voters who simply must vote for a Republican they should consider Michael Maxsenti (R). At 75 Maxsenti is will past his prime, but he is an honest and decent man with a winning business record that make him an attractive Republican option for those looking for a moderate who is still willing to do Trump’s dirty work. Maxsenti is definitely Trump aligned, however, and has given every indication of falling in line with Trump’s policy choices–so center-right voters need to take that into consideration when selecting a candidate.
CENTER LEFT (TRADITIONAL DEMOCRATS)– INCUMBENT MIN IS WEAK AND SMART VOTERS PICK ERIC J. TROUTMAN
Traditional democratic voters will find themselves gravitating toward the incumbent Dave Min in this district. Sure Min had that terrible DUI– blowing a .15 and ending up in handcuffs while serving as a rep in Sacramento– but Dave is the incumbent so a lot of voters will be eager to stick with him.
Thinking Democratic voters, however, will pause to consider Eric J. Troutman in this spot. Unlike Min, Troutman has a sparkling background and incredible qualifications. Plus Troutman has the firepower to get things done with Trump that Min– a first-term candidate who has limited respect in his own party and is despised by the Republicans–can never achieve. This includes ending the use of militarized ICE agents in Orange County once and for all.
Dave Min hasn’t had the strength to stop ICE raids in the OC, reign in Trump’s reckless wars and spending, or prevent Trump from taking advantage of California’s tax dollars. Min has simply failed. Indeed, Dave Min is often called (by Troutman, at least) the “weakest Democrat” in Congress and has been repeatedly pushed around by the Trump administration. Min’s X feed is full of whining and claims of letters he has written that have not been responded to. Min often appears lost an inept– if not downright scared– in his efforts to deal with the forceful Trump administration that has threatened to put oil rigs off the coast of this district.
Troutman on the other hand is one of the most powerful lawyers in the nation and well-equipped to STOP Trump when he is out of hand– and protect California’s coast and people. Indeed, Troutman plans to use the leverage he has as a true independent to make great deals with Trump and the Republicans to deliver tons of resources and money to the District. Troutman has a plan to deliver $2 billion in infrastructure spending to the district in his first two years– the kind of federal funding Min and the Democrats simply have no chance of achieving with this administration.
At bottom, left-of-center voters who want to see a TRUE WINNER with the fire power to STOP Trump when he is out of hand and recklessly harming California need
HARD LEFT (SOCIALISTS)– ODDBALL CANDIDATE Jesus Patino MAY BE FOR YOU
For those of you who want to see the nation veering further to the left, you should give a look to Jesus Patino.
Jesus is a definite outsider who has a broadly-liberal platform including lowering restrictions on college degrees, reducing homework, and water fountains everywhere.
He has fascinating views on environmental policies and healthcare as well.
Patino is definitely NOT a traditional candidate but if you are looking to someone to really shock the country he might be just the guy for you.
