BREAKING: Biden Making FCC Moves–Commission Likely Back at Full Strength Soon

Big news out of DC today.

President Biden just announced that Acting Chairwoman Rosenworcel would be appointed the permanent chair of the FCC. Biden also announced that he would nominate public interest lawyer and ex-FCC official Gigi Sohn to be the fifth and final FCC Commissioner.

The Commission—which generally has 5 commissioners—has been operating with only four commissioners since Biden took office (2 Republicans and 2 Democrats).

Following the potential addition of Sohn–whose confirmation needs to be approved by the Senate– the FCC would be back to full strength, and the Democrats would hold a 3-2 advantage among commissioners.

Gigi Sohn is a former president and co-founder of Public Knowledge and previously  held a senior staff position at FCC. She has also held fellowship positions with Georgetown Law’s Institute for Technology Law & Policy.

We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.
