Hi TCPAWorld! A bit of AI news today. As a major update to New Mexico’s campaign laws, the state has implemented stringent regulations on political advertisements that use artificial intelligence to create or manipulate media. Section 1-19-26.4 NMSA 1978. The state now requires explicit disclaimers on a range of AI-generated media which really is a crucial step towards maintaining electoral integrity.
Under the revised statute, any political advertisement exceeding $1,000 in expenditure must now include a clear disclaimer if it features AI-generated or manipulated media. The regulation extends to all forms of media—images, videos, and audio—demanding that these disclaimers be conspicuously placed and easily readable or audible, depending on the medium.
Violators are even subject to criminal penalties. One strike is a misdemeanor, and a second strike is a felony!
The law goes into effect on May 15, 2024. Click here for full text.
