Tomorrow we vote.
Choosing between two unqualified candidates.
They tell us this is choice.
They tell us this is freedom.
It was never supposed to work this way.
Free-thinking electors–qualified individuals from each community–were supposed to gather to elect the right president for the country without bias.
Americans were never supposed to vote directly for the president–who was essentially a chief bureaucrat.
But the political parties have taken over the process and replaced free-thinking electors with a slate of die-hard partisans in each state.
They’re job? To elect only the individual hand-chosen by party members to serve their platform.
Huh?
This is PLAINLY unconstitutional.
But more basically–and seriously– who would POSSIBLY think that sort of system is a good idea?
If you want people to vote directly for the president, do so.
If you want to have a group of educated representative standing between the people and the choice of a president, do so.
But NOBODY would chose the weird system the political parties have created for us. Just the dumbest form of inefficient insanity.
Yet, here we are.
Funny note.
The vice-president was originally supposed to be the candidate who received the second most votes. (That would be like Trump or Harris being the other one’s vice president.) This was brilliant because the runner-up would then be the head of the Senate and be “vice” (i.e. AGAINST) the sitting president– a very powerful check and balance upon the presidency.
But the the political parties didn’t like that. They changed the constitution to allow the vice-president to be chosen by the president. That way the president could always have a tie-breaker in the Senate and control over important functions there.
It was the first step, but certainly not the last, toward the system we have today. Where the political parties conspire to control our government–all three branches, that were supposed to check each other–in order to serve only party members.
When one party controls the legislature and the presidency they can rule as they see fit– taking the country careening toward the right or the left, when most of us just want a calm predictable middle.
It was never supposed to work this way.
And it is all so unconstitutional.
But go vote tomorrow and try not to think about it.
