So we’re on our way to the big TCPA summit in Florida.
While we’re stopped in Dallas I figured I’d point out a few things about this year’s College Football Playoff.
First, we don’t need one.
The national champion is the Oregon Ducks.
Playoff is only needed in a year when there isn’t already plainly a correct national champion pick.
Consider:
- They’re the ONLY unbeaten team in the nation;
- They’re the unanimous AP No. 1 pick;
- They’ve beaten THREE other top ten teams, including accounting for Boise State’s only loss.
No one else has a legitimate claim to the title. There’s no need for a playoff. They’re the national champion. Period.
That’s not to say Oregon will win the playoff. They may, they may not. But the point is, there’s shouldn’t be a playoff.
But, there is.
So let’s talk about it.
First, anyone else notice that TWO legacy Pac-12 teams are conference champions who earned Byes?
Hmmmm… who could have seen that coming? Just me, as always.
Pac-12 was the best conference for a decade but the east-coast bias (and 9-game conference schedule) kept the conference underrated (and out of the playoff) forever. Terrible.
But now that the conference has exploded into neighboring fields I predict Pac-12 schools will have their way with the nation for a long time to come.
In fact, there might not be a legacy Big10 champion for the rest of the decade. Maybe never again. Seriously.
And next year it won’t surprise me AT ALL if 3 of the 4 byes go to legacy pac12 teams.
The conference of champions keeps on championing.
But let’s look at the (unnecessary) playoff bracket real quick.
Georgia v. Oregon is most likely outcome here.
I REALLY like SMU in the first round against Penn State.
Clemson is plenty dangerous but I think Texas is just too good.
Indiana and Notre Dame are pretty much the same school so, take your pick.
That just leaves Ohio State and Tennessee. Tough one. I’ll go with the Volunteers here, however.
Oh, and for the second year in a row there’s a Florida school whining about missing the playoff. Miami– don’t lose two of your last three games if you want in the bracket.
Also, ebb tide. Or whatever.
Love.
