So since we are the official law firm of Cal Athletics– and we have our logo on the field and everything– I figured I’d start doing little Sunday recaps of the Golden Bears football games.
And it wont surprise anyone who reads this blog that somehow I intend to take full credit for the win. 🙂
Just kidding.
Sort of.

Before we move forward, let’s go backward. To the Big Game against Stanford from last year.
That was the first time the Troutman Amin, LLP name-although not our logo–was present on the field at Cal Berkeley.

Oski rides his bike past our logo pre-game.
Cal fans will surely recall the team was down late in the third quarter and about to go down even deeper when–a miracle– the Stanford snap went high and Stanford missed the field goal. At that time it was 21-7 and had Stanford made the field goal it would have been a 3 score game. Instead Cal took over, took momentum, and went on to take the game (and keep the axe.)
You will notice, however, just as the ball is snapped the Troutman Amin, LLP gold lion flashes upon the screen:
The Troutman Amin, LLP effect…
So on to last night’s game.
An ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE game for both teams.
The powerful Golden Bears were 2-0 coming in and with a AMAZING schedule ahead of them a win might set up something truly special this year.

Amazing on field views
Meanwhile, however, the Minnesota Gophers were looking no less golden– a 2-0 team with one of the best statistical defenses in the nation–coming off a bowl win last year they have performed fantastic in their last five games.
Both the Gophers and the Golden Bears needed this win to seal a strong start and give them momentum headed into conference play– but only one team would get it.
I felt very positive the Bears were the better team coming in– even though they were slight underdogs– but they looked quite shaky at times against an inferior Texas Southern squad so we didn’t know what to expect against a Big Ten defense.

I’m losing my mind pretty much the whole game.
The Bears did get off to a bit of a slow start offensively, but the defense was absolutely superb right from the start–even without Cade Uluave in the first half as he was serving a suspension.
The Bears lead 10-7 at half time but the Gophers took the lead 14-10 in the third quarter. So this was turning into a nail bier.
But then, with 20 seconds left to go in the third quarter the magical Mason Mini broke two tackles and muscled his way through five defenders to find the end zone.
Absolutely electric stuff.
Brilliant. Physical. Just gorgeous. And we really needed it.
Bears up 17-14.
Still, the ghosts of seasons past weighed on me as the Gophers put together a strong drive to start the fourth quarter. They made it as deep as the Cal 30 before linebacker Luke Ferrelli delivered a CRITICAL tackle for loss on third down (you can hear Puja screaming in the highlight during the play.) That forced a long field goal try, which the Gophers missed.
Beautiful. Things are looking great.
But then the Gopher defense stopped the Bears flat and the ball was set to be sent back to the Gophers.
With the Bears holding just a 3 point lead this could have been a tough momentum swing that gave the Gophers a chance for a fourth quarter drive.
And that’s where the Troutman Amin, LLP Golden Lion comes in.
Just like during the Stanford game, the Golden Lion flashed on the screen as the punt was delivered and–guess what??
THEY MUFFED IT!!! CAL RECOVERS THE BALL!
You can see the clip here:
Troutman Amin effect again???
That set up a critical fourth quarter touchdown– which I recorded from the field before being nearly knocked out by the Cal flag bearer:
Watch until the end.
Hahahahahahaah
So is it a coincidence that two back-breaking special teams errors befell our villains in critical moments in consecutive games with the Lion on screen?
Probably.
But there’s no doubt the mighty Golden Lion is helping the Golden Bears in some form or fashion.
The Golden Bears are now 3-0 at home with the Troutman Amin, LLP name on the field. 🙂
We had a great time!
Tons of fun obviously. These guys played their hearts out and it was a total team win.
Loved to see it.
Will be back up there for the Duke game.
Go Bears!
