$10MM DOWN THE DRAIN: Court Grants Final Approval to Gen Digital’s $9,950,000 TCPA Settlement Disaster

Gen Digital was just hammered in a TCPA class action settlement to the tune of nearly $10MM– with over $3.3MM going to the plaintiff’s lawyers.

In Jackson v. Gen Digital, 2026 WL 2052012 (D. Az July 14, 2026) the plaintiff sued alleging receipt of wrong number prerecorded calls regarding LifeLock products.

Plaintiff went off and retained Mr. Number One– Mike Greenwald– who is probably the most dangerous man in the TCPAWorld.

Greenwald teamed up with the Wolf– Anthony Paronich–and they absolutely smoked Gen Digital’s outmatched defense lawyers. Eesh. (In fairness though Greenwald and Paronich together are a hell of a combo to deal with).

As a result Gen Digital had to cry uncle and open up their wallet to the tune of nearly $10MM– $9.95MM to be precise. But hey. at least it didn’t hit 8 figures right?

The class included:

All persons throughout the United States (1) to whom Gen Digital Inc. placed, or caused to be placed,
a call regarding a LifeLock or Norton account, (2) directed to a telephone number assigned to a cellular
telephone service, but not assigned to a person who has or had a LifeLock or Norton account with Gen
Digital Inc., (3) in connection with which Gen Digital Inc. used or caused to be used an artificial or
prerecorded voice, (4) from February 19, 2021 to October 30, 2025.

Making matters more interesting, quite a few consumers opted out and have the right to individually sue the defendant in their own TCPA cases. This includes all of these folks: Bradley Vance, Brenda Lane, Carol Libby, Colleen Parmele, Donald Barker, Gloria Newell, Janet Courtney, Jean Baxley, Latonia Holloway, Maria Kashner, Megan Robinson, Robert L. Picek, Robert Rios, Robert Rutzel, Rose Lund, Sandra Larson, and Gerald Southbloom.

Will be interesting to see if Gen Digital faces a barrage of new suits or if this settlement buys peace.

Another lesson folks– if you are using prerecorded calls (or AI!!) to send account updates or alerts BE CAREFUL. One wrong number call can lead to a class action– and that can lead to a $10MM pay out!

  1. Yep, down the drain sounds about right. A well deserved result!

Especially considering the FCC was kind enough to create the RND, which went live…hold for it…in Nov 2021. So for the majority of the class defined time frame they easily could/should have been using said database – they could have avoided this altogether. But hey, with $5 BILLION in FY2026 revenue, 10M is only 0.2 % Hence, it’s just the cost of doing biz.

That said, as one of the countless victimized consumers that has been bombarded with scammy ‘your comp is infected’ texts – which if one follows thru to see just who’s behind this end up at a …hold for it…Norton LifeLock (or one of the many other ‘comp security’ offerings from GenDigital) sales website.

Oh but wait, with the absurd push to remove SMS from TCPA 227(c)(5) liability that will open the literal floodgates with no recourse for us 250 MILLION + on the NDNC.

Say just what does REACH stand for? Oh yeah, ‘Responsible Enterprises Against Consumer Harassment’ As a harassed consumer I would think working to abolish any notion that texts do NOT = calls would fit right into your mission statement…

Off topic? Yet another James Connors infamous tangential tirade?

Maybe, but it’s just Gen Digital conjures up very unpleasant memories of being another harassed consumer that quite likely will soon have ZERO RECOURSE unless some powerful, resourceful organizations stand up for us – ‘cough, cough – REACH’
