Former ConsumerAffairs GC Joins Troutman Amin In Calif.
The former general counsel of ConsumerAffairs has jumped to Irvine, California-based marketing law firm Troutman Amin LLP.
The firm announced Wednesday the addition of John Henson, who led his former company’s legal and compliance matters and assisted with its talent and culture efforts. He has joined Troutman Amin’s compliance legal team.
“I was comfortable in my role as general counsel for ConsumerAffairs, but the opportunity to join Troutman Amin LLP was too good to pass up,” Henson said in a statement to Law360 Pulse on Thursday. “Moving to Troutman Amin made sense for me because it allowed me to practice in my specialty of working with digital marketers and lead generation companies while deepening my expertise to help these companies.”
Troutman Amin handles complex federal court litigation and provides compliance counseling on emerging privacy and telecom legal issues, the firm said.
“It only made sense to go work for the best firm for digital marketers and lead generators, which is Troutman Amin. Becoming an expert requires working with and learning from experts, and I get to do just that with Eric [Troutman] and Puja [Amin],” Henson said.
He added “I will be leveraging my expertise to help our clients with their compliance concerns while Eric and Puja continue to protect companies with their litigation practice. This allows the firm to really be a complete partner for them across a multitude of issues specific to our industry.”
Henson’s resume includes leading ConsumerAffairs’ marketing efforts, financial services verticals, lead generation practices and reputation-management services.
Earlier in his career, Henson held several roles with Lending Tree, including vice president of compliance, interim general counsel and assistant general manager of mortgage vertical.
“The guy is a literal hero to people in the industry. So many folks look up to him and respect his guidance and advice. No way he would choose another firm when he had the opportunity to join us — and he didn’t,” partner Puja J. Amin said in a statement.
A graduate of Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law, Henson earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Martin Methodist College, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Recently, Troutman Amin has been working to stop robocalls through work with a mutual benefit corporation called Responsible Enterprises Against Consumer Harassment. The firm said it has led efforts to educate lead generation and direct-to-consumer marketing industries on the consequences of failing to comply with the law related to robocalls.
“Henson was absolutely the hottest in-house lateral in the market. Everybody wanted this guy. And in the end — after a pile of homework — the guy decided to bring his talents to Troutman Amin LLP. Very smart move on his part. Very smart,” founder Eric J. Troutman said in a statement.
